They are older varieties that have been cultivated for a long time (and thus are not patented by evil agribusinesses). I think heirloom produce is pretty good in general, but so far I've just tried the one variety of beans. Also, I think these beans were tasty because they are very fresh -- you never know how many years the beans at the store have been on the shelf.
